Project summary

Obtaining clean and contaminant-free water is an ongoing challenge due to the presence of organics in fresh water supplies. Typically, noble metal catalysts are used to convert water-based organic pollutants into benign products. However, the use of a noble metal as the active catalyst increases treatment costs considerably. Simple metal oxides are being proposed for reducing the cost of water treatment. Surface defect engineering has gained attention as a strategy for boosting metal oxide catalytic performance. The proposed project aims to engineer defects in simple metal oxides to catalyse the removal of organic contaminants.
