Projects: Efficient Catalysts Designed for Electrochemical Synthesis of Nitrates
Nitrates are widely used in agriculture and industry. The current method for large-scale production is a combination of Haber-Bosch and Ostwald oxidation processes, which not only require harsh conditions but also release greenhouse gas. The direct synthesis of nitrate by electrochemical nitrogen oxidation reaction is a viable and promising alternative approach because of its mild reaction condition and environmental friendliness. However, the high bond energy of nitrogen is difficult to be activated, resulting in sluggish research progress. Therefore, the exploration of efficient electrocatalysts remains a priority. This project is to explore more efficient electrocatalysts that possess excellent nitrate yields and Faraday efficiencies for electrocatalytic reactions.
