Dr Jodie Yuwono is an ARC DECRA Fellow in the School of Chemical Engineering at UNSW Sydney and an Associate Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Carbon Science and Innovation. His expertise is in computational electrochemistry, where he uses atomistic simulation and artificial intelligence to design materials for sustainable energy and chemical technologies.
Dr Yuwono’s research focuses on electrode–electrolyte interfaces, where most electrochemical devices succeed or fail. Using first-principles calculations, molecular dynamics and machine learning, he uncovers the atomic-scale mechanisms behind performance and turns these insights into design rules for new materials. In energy storage, these principles have guided electrolyte and anode design for aqueous zinc-ion and zinc–iodine batteries, stable lithium metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes, and high-entropy materials for Li-ion, Na-ion and Li–CO₂ batteries. In catalysis, they have produced single-atom and high-entropy catalysts that convert CO₂ and nitrate into urea, ammonia and other value-added chemicals. The same approach extends to biomass electro-oxidation, photoreforming and corrosion of metals.
Beyond fundamental research, Dr Yuwono works with industry and defence partners on advanced electrochemical simulation, contributes to critical-metal recovery from spent batteries and informs national energy-policy discussion. His work aims to replace trial and error with predictive design, so that new energy materials reach practical use faster.
